2010 Gold Award & Employer of the Year
An outstanding application. Severe parking pressures have been tackled courageously through rigorous needs-based demand management, and the University has been quick to embrace innovation, with measures including HUBs free bus, car club, Cycling City Business Engagement, and a new U-Link bus partnership with UWE. Travelling to the University by car has halved and the University is at the forefront of establishing a forum to share good practice between higher educational institutions nationally.

2010 Gold
The University of Bath is an especially good example of an organisation that has successfully combined a residential student travel plan with an employer and educational establishment one. They have achieved a commendable 15% reduction in car use over the last 10 years and have shown a strong commitment to demand management, which is an integral part of this plan. But they have also assisted and funded the implementation of a residents’ parking scheme to alleviate the problems of overspill parking in neighbouring streets.
Peter Brett has the lowest single occupancy vehicle rate of any applicant this year, at 12.5%, a 65% reduction since 2005. The company takes a professional pride in leading by example. It is a very small office with only a few simple measures but absolute commitment by the staff, who recorded 95% of staff travelling sustainably in the Big Commuter Count snapshot survey in 2009. PBA is ISO accredited and recorded approximately 20% business mileage reductions in 2009, a good baseline to build upon.
Lyons Davidson has an all round culture of sustainability. It is well placed in the centre of Bristol and fewer than 17.1% of employees are driving to work alone. Self- reporting at Bristol’s Big Commuter Count logged only 11.6% travelling to work alone in the car. It is very pleasing to see that its offices in Bristol are logging business travel reduction emissions (134.59 tonnes CO2e saved) + 3,800 tonnes from video-conferencing in first quarter of 2010.
2010 Silver Star
Bath Spa University has created a combined residential/employer/educational establishment travel plan for its 6,000 staff and students. In 2009 they earned a Silver Travel Plan Award for, amongst other reasons, overcoming some difficulty with the isolated location of their main site. Since then they have shown continuous improvement and have particularly improved their cycle facilities, bus services and are very good on incentives and promotions.
Halcrow’s commitment and a wise relocation choice at end of 2007 has led to an excellent sov reduction of 62.8% in three years. It provides a clear demonstration of the crucial importance of location in influencing travel habits. Halcrow has a good understanding of its successes and failures and has made very evident and commendable efforts to engage all staff in sustainable travel culture. It is particularly good on cycling and events promotion, and has an exemplar “Spring into Action” travel week for staff every year.
DAS has been a leading light in travel planning since 2002 when the company first won a Gold Award, and again in 2004 and 2007. DAS has also encouraged travel planning in the wider community through the Temple Quay Partnership. Together with Lyons Davidson Solicitors and Peter Brett Associates, DAS has effectively demonstrated the value of a central location in stimulating shift to more sustainable travel, due to expensive parking and better public transport links.
Bristol City Council (Somerfield House)
Bristol City Council knew it was taking a risk in relocating some 600 staff, many of whom worked in the centre of Bristol, to Somerfield House at Hengrove, some four and a half miles out. It therefore developed a very energetic travel plan, investing money in cycling infrastructure, public bus service improvements which would benefit the whole community, and a needs-based car parking management system with an emphasis on car-sharing, with over 60 bays reserved for car sharers. These are always full and it is under consideration to make more such spaces available. An innovation is the Park-Share option, when staff share one parking bay between at least two people, encouraging them to travel more sustainable on other days. A car-share match making service has proved so popular that initial surveys indicate a sharing rate of some one in three staff.
2010 Silver Award
Mouchel, a consultancy with transport specialisms, have reduced the amount of solo drivers by over 15%, despite some challenges and restrictions imposed by their landlord. The commitment and dedication of their staff has enabled them to maintain progress and has also helped put travel planning on their corporate agenda.
Ministry of Defence (Abbey Wood)
The MOD have shown great commitment to encouraging sustainable travel, spurred on by an increase of 3500 staff with no extra parking an option. The MOD travel plan succeeds by keeping sustainable travel on the agenda through regular travel roadshows, monthly travel newsletters and a ‘drop in’ public transport helpdesk to name but a few. 15 cycling events have been held so far this year and active promotion of car sharing has resulted in membership doubling on their car share scheme, and they are now in ‘silver position’ nationally within their sector.
South Gloucestershire Council (Badminton Road)
South Gloucestershire Council have developed a flagship travel plan for their new offices at Badminton Road in Yate in order to set an example to other organisations in the area and demonstrate their corporate social responsibility to reducing travel by private car as well as a commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The Badminton Road Offices have introduced a needs based car parking management system, with a strong emphasis on car sharing. Local bus services have been both introduced and also improved to the benefit of both staff and residents and smarter working processes such as homeworking have been key in reducing the number of commuting and business trips.
